A partnership between 6 St. Joseph House
and Our Homes Association

- The housing initiative at 682 & 688 Broadview Ave. is a pilot project to demonstrate a supportive housing model for individuals who have completed treatment for addiction. At each house, 10 men live in a supportive housing arrangement. They share their skills and are offered activities such as renovation work and a computer repair workshop. As well, the men are expected to participate in outside recovery support meetings and programs.
- There is a real shortage of supportive housing places for people who have completed addiction treatment programs and want to make a change in their lives. Experience has demonstrated that individuals have a much better chance of success if they can live in a supportive community with others who are committed to not use using drugs or alcohol. We have a long waiting list.
- Each person living in the house has signed an agreement not to use substances, and they have agreed to leave if they break this agreement.
- The residents have developed by themselves a set of rules for each house and each person contributes to the maintenance and operation of their house.
- Each resident pays about $400 per month for rent so that the houses are self-sustaining with the rents.
- The residents at each house participate in a weekly house meeting and in a weekly 12 step meeting. We offer additional programs at our new resource centre at 740 Broadview Ave. and also at 6 St. Joseph House.
- We are networking with other community organizations in the Riverdale area, such as the new OASIS Centre at 686 Broadview which offers pre-employment training. Oasis is hosting life-skills programs at 6 St. Joseph House and 740 Broadview Ave.
- Experienced addiction recovery individuals guide the ongoing operation of the houses, including weekly house meetings. The prospect of success for individuals in recovery is greatly enhanced with this type of supportive community-based housing.
